Pond Installation & Surgical Dam Repair

Building a pond that holds water year-round requires precise soil hydrology, clay core keyways, and code-grade compaction. At Knights Construction and Supplies, we design, excavate, and repair agricultural livestock ponds, retention basins, and recreational lakes across Sanford, Pittsboro, and Central North Carolina.

Clay Core Keyways
Deep trench cutoff to bedrock prevents seepage under the dam.
Dam Leak Diagnosis
Surgical bentonite sealing and embankment rebuilding.
Emergency Spillways
Armor-plated riprap spillways engineered for 100-year storms.

Pond Capability Highlights

  • Farm and agricultural livestock watering ponds
  • Commercial HOA storm-water retention & detention basins
  • Silt dredging, weed muck removal & depth deepening
  • Dam stabilization, burrowing pest remediation & pipe repair

How We Build Ponds That Never Dry Up Or Breach

A hole in the ground filled with rainwater will quickly leak out without proper geotechnical soil analysis and a compacted clay core. Here is our exact construction protocol:

01

Soil Testing & Watershed Sizing

We evaluate watershed acreage (typically 3 to 5 acres of runoff per acre-foot of pond) and perform test pits to verify sufficient plastic clay content (minimum 20% clay) before digging begins.

// TOPOGRAPHY & HYDROLOGY
02

Clay Core Cutoff Trench (Keyway)

We dig a trench along the centerline of the dam through permeable sand/gravel down to solid impervious clay bedrock. This is backfilled with select clay in compacted 6" lifts to stop subsurface leaks.

// SUB-SURFACE WATER TIGHT
03

3:1 Slope & Embankment Compaction

Sides and interior banks are graded to a safe 3:1 slope to prevent wave erosion, soil sloughing, and safety hazards. Dams are crowned at a minimum 10 to 12 foot top width for vehicle access.

// VIBRATORY COMPACTED LIFTS
04

Dual-Stage Overflow Drainage

Every pond includes a primary mechanical drop-inlet riser pipe with anti-seep collars, paired with an emergency vegetated or riprap-lined overflow spillway to safely bypass catastrophic flash floods.

Restoration & Leak Repairs

Is Your Existing Pond Leaking Or Silted In?

Ponds lose water for three main reasons: a failed pipe collar, animal burrows piercing the dam, or sand seams in the basin. We provide targeted remediation without needlessly bulldozing your entire landscape.

Sodium Bentonite Sealing

High-swelling volcanic bentonite is tilled into permeable basin soils and rolled to form an impenetrable impermeable membrane.

Silt Dredging & Cleanout

Long-reach excavators excavate accumulated black anaerobic muck, restoring original depth, cool water temperatures, and fish habitat.

Overflow Pipe Replacement

Corroded metal corrugated pipes cause dam sinkholes. We replace them with heavy-wall smooth interior HDPE pipes and welded seepage collars.

Riprap Embankment Armor

Heavy Class A and Class B granite riprap stone stabilizes steep banks and wave-impact shorelines from erosion.

Common Warning Signs

⚠ WET SPOTS AT BACK OF DAM Internal piping risk
⚠ WATER DROPS > 1" PER DAY Exceeds evaporation
⚠ WEED & ALGAE CHOKE Shallow depth < 4 ft
⚠ RUSTED OUTLET PIPE Vulnerable to blowout
On-Site Engineering Assessment

Our operator will evaluate your dam elevation, spillway geometry, and soil composition directly on your property.
